How to Set Up Your First Garmin Watch
Share
Start with the correct app and the owner's manual for your exact model. For RBO's adult Forerunner, Venu and fēnix watches, the connected setup uses Garmin Connect. Bounce 2 is different: a parent or guardian uses Garmin Jr. and sets up the required subscription for LTE features.
1. Charge and identify your watch
Read the model and size on the box or product listing. The same watch family can contain different versions, so avoid following an old video's button sequence just because the watch looks similar. Charge with the supplied compatible cable and follow the watch's initial prompts.
2. Pair through the app
For adult models, follow Garmin Connect's pairing flow rather than pairing only from your phone's Bluetooth settings. Have the watch and compatible phone together and follow the on-screen instructions. If you skipped pairing during initial setup, use your model's manual to find its Pair Phone menu.
3. Complete the basics before adding extras
Review your profile, units, notification choices and usual sleep schedule. Then sync and check for software updates. Start with notifications you actually want; you can add more later. Do not feel that you need to enable every optional feature on day one.
4. Check fit and a simple activity
Wear the watch comfortably and follow Garmin's fit instructions. Our watch size guide explains how to separate band fit from case diameter. On a short familiar outing, select the intended activity, wait for an outdoor GPS signal when appropriate, then practise starting, stopping, saving and syncing it.
Set data screens around information you will use. Pace, distance and elapsed time may be enough for your first run. You can explore additional training measurements as you become familiar with the watch; health and fitness readings are estimates, not diagnoses.
5. Add music, payments or navigation only if you need them
Check model support before setting up extras. Stored music can require a provider account; Garmin Pay requires a participating bank. Prepare supported routes or map downloads before an outing. Our phone-free Garmin guide explains which features still need a phone or service.
The Bounce 2 setup path
A parent or guardian should complete setup in Garmin Jr., review approved contacts and permissions, and arrange the LTE subscription if using calls, messages and location features. Test the family's intended communication and check-in routine before the child relies on it. Follow the Bounce 2 manual for the exact steps.
If pairing does not work
Check phone compatibility and use the troubleshooting section of the correct manual. Avoid factory-resetting a watch as your first experiment, especially if it already contains data. Garmin's support resources can guide the next step for your model.
