Can You Use a Garmin Watch Without Your Phone?

Yes, you can record activities using built-in GPS on the adult Garmin watches discussed here without carrying your phone for the activity. That does not mean every connected feature works independently. Separate recording a run from receiving messages, making calls, downloading music or sharing a live location.

GPS activity recording is one question

A GPS watch uses satellite signals to determine its location during supported activities. Let it acquire a signal before starting an outdoor activity and save the recording when you finish. You can sync the activity with your account later. GPS reception is not cellular service and does not turn the watch into a phone.

Music is another question

The Forerunner 70 controls music playing on your phone; it does not offer onboard music storage. Forerunner 570, Forerunner 970, Venu 4 and fēnix 9 support stored audio. Set up the provider or load your audio before leaving, and check any subscription requirements. Bluetooth headphones can be used for watch-stored audio; supported models also have a speaker.

Controlling a playlist on your phone and playing a playlist downloaded to your watch are different functions. Test your intended setup before assuming you can leave the phone at home.

Calls and notifications depend on the model and connection

The speaker and microphone on the 570, 970 and Venu 4 support connected features with a compatible paired smartphone. They do not make those models independent LTE phones. Notifications and phone-based messaging also depend on the connection and phone compatibility.

Why Bounce 2 is different

Bounce 2 uses Garmin Jr. for parent or guardian setup. LTE calling, messaging and live location features require an active Garmin plan and coverage. Before you leave the phone behind

• Decide whether you only need to record an activity or also need communication.
• Check the exact model's requirements for the features you need.
• Download intended audio and routes beforehand where supported.
• Test the setup on a familiar outing, with another way to get help if necessary.

LiveTrack and assistance requirements vary. Do not rely on a watch feature as your only way to obtain emergency help. Our standard fēnix 9 does not include inReach satellite communication.
