Garmin Forerunner 70 vs 570: When Is the Upgrade Worth It?
Share
The Forerunner 70 is a useful starting point when you want a GPS running watch without paying for features you may not use. Consider the Forerunner 570 when onboard music, Garmin Pay, multiband GPS or connected calling are part of your plan. Both deserve consideration; a higher model number alone is not a reason to spend more.
The decision at a glance
| What you want | Forerunner 70 | Forerunner 570 |
|---|---|---|
| See the models at RBO | Forerunner 70 | 570 42 mm or 570 47 mm |
| Running guidance | Training and recovery tools | Training and recovery tools |
| Music away from your phone | Controls phone music; no onboard music storage | Stores audio on the watch |
| Contactless payments | No Garmin Pay | Garmin Pay with a participating bank |
| GPS | Built-in GPS | Multiband GPS with SatIQ |
| Phone calls from your wrist | No integrated calling speaker/microphone | Speaker and microphone; compatible paired phone required |
When the Forerunner 70 is enough
Start here if your main goal is recording runs and following your progress. Garmin's 70 manual includes training readiness, recovery time and training status, so it would be misleading to describe it as a watch with no training guidance. You can buy the less expensive option and still have information to work with.
Write down the features you expect to use every week. If music comes from your phone and contactless payments are unimportant, those upgrades may add little to your routine. Consistency matters more than collecting a longer feature list.
When paying more for the 570 makes sense
A 570 is worth a closer look if you want stored music, Garmin Pay or a choice of two case sizes. Its connected calling feature uses your compatible phone; the watch does not become an independent cellular phone. Third-party music services can require a separate subscription.
Choose your case size separately from your feature priorities. Read our Garmin sizing guide before deciding between 42 mm and 47 mm.
Does the more expensive watch last longer between charges?
Not necessarily. Garmin rates the 70 for up to 13 days in smartwatch mode and 23 hours in GPS-only mode. The 570 is rated for up to 10 days in 42 mm or 11 days in 47 mm, and up to 18 hours in GPS-only mode. These are different-mode maximums, not our measured results. Your settings and activities affect runtime.
What if you need built-in maps?
Compare the Forerunner 970 rather than assuming the 570 adds full-color maps. Our 570 vs 970 comparison explains that next decision.
